The Dry Tortugas Research Natural Area (RNA) was established in to create a new layer of protection for the marine resources of Dry Tortugas National Park.
The RNA is a square-mile no-take ecological preserve that provides a sanctuary for species affected by fishing and loss of habitat in this region of the Gulf of Mexico. The Dry Tortugas are located at the westernmost extent of the Keys.
The area contains diverse habitats, including seagrass beds, coral reef habitats, (e.g., patch reefs, fore reefs, intermediate and deep reefs), and hardbottom areas. Sanctuary.
